Visit Mary i am a Christian, but the nature-imagery in this painting draws me in as well as its reference to what's framed as "agape." This could be a mother, this could be a great mothering tree or an ancient snake cradling the child. The drape of her garments suggest a non-human sinuosity; her extended toes and fingers could be roots, or animal claws. i am a Christian, and also an animal advocate and ecologist who frequently meditates on safe and sheltered places in the natural world as images of God's love, and i find this meditation recapitulated here. The child has an oddly mature face. An old child, like me, sheltered in the many layers and veils of loving creation. But he looks a bit wary, too. In fact he looks a lot like my rabbit, Angelo, aware he would be a nice bite for something like that not quite comforting presence in the background.
